Bigger is Better: Massive Hisense 110 UX 4K TV is Now Available

Bigger is better when it comes to the Hisense 110″ ULED X 4K mini-LED TV and now it’s here. It is a colossal 110-inch (2.8m) display that needs a team of four to install. The box it arrives in weighs more than 150kgs so it isn’t something you just slide around the room. The price is pretty hefty too – A$24,999.

Unlike many other large TVs around the 100-inch mark, the 110 UX produces a fantastic picture. I spent the night with Hisense’s flagship beast in a Sydney hotel with harbour views. Despite the great vista, I found it hard to take my eyes off the massive TV which they somehow transported to the 26th floor of the W-Sydney.

As you can see in the Sky News segment video above, the 110 UX was taller than me. Admittedly it did receive a boost from a small cabinet but the shot still proved a point. This TV is insanely massive and I kept wondering, “how would this look in portrait mode?”

Actually, this height is about right given when sitting on a couch you’ll be looking towards the middle of the screen.

WOW FACTOR

It takes some time to get over the massive size of the 110 UX. A 2.8 metre screen is something to behold, no matter what size the room.

When off, it’s glossy. The hotel room had a lot of windows so it was clear to me that in dark scenes you will see yourself and the room reflected on the display. Hisense says it has an anti-glare display and it does help. It reflects 20% less glare while offering a 40% wider viewing angle. If you’re watching bright content this is not an issue due to the incredible light output of this TV. For example, watching test cricket on Kayo was amazing even in the brightest part of the day, with the drapes fully retracted.

PICTURE

What can I say? Well played Hisense, I did not expect this TV to be this good. I know that sounds a little odd for a $25K TV but it’s easy to put most of that cost reasoning down to size and not picture quality.

Not only is the 110 UX capable of 10,000 nits peak brightness, its colour and motion reproduction rivals some of the flagship TVs from the other top brands. You can see in the image below how the explosion in “Interstellar’ lights up the scene and in reality, lit up the room. It’s able to do this thanks to 40,000 local dimming zones. For reference, a conventional ULED TV will ‘only’ reach 3,000 nits peak.

While it’s easy to get carried away with these peak brightness numbers, the truth is, you’ll rarely ever see the TV produce numbers like we’ve mentioned. Firstly, it happens in a very small window, not the whole screen, and it doesn’t last long. Having said that, the 110 UX can stay insanely bright for a long time across the entire screen.

At the same time, blacks are also excellent on the 110 UX. In the image below you can see how I’m pointing out the ‘Endurance’ against the blackness of space and the creamy browns of Saturn. Up close this is like pixel peeping but when positioned on the lounge, it looks magnificent. Not LG G4 OLED standard but it’s not far off.

Even though this panel is 8bit+FRC and not 10-bit, colours are bold and pretty accurate, right out of the box. Filmmaker mode or Cinema Night/Day is where I spent most of my time. I actually like the look of these modes while watching sport. Grass looks more realistic in these settings – much better than sport or dynamic mode. I just tweak the motion blur settings and I’m all good for the footy and cricket.

And this is where the 110 UX really shines. Sport looks incredible, even from an angle on this screen. It really is the perfect big screen for big sport. Cricket is a great example due to the size of the playing field. On this TV you feel like you’re in the stadium as the screen dominates your field of view.

The SDR performance is great but the HDR results are stellar. Dolby Vision™ IQ, HDR 10+ Adaptive, HDR 10 and IMAX® Enhanced Certification ensure you get what the creators want on screen or very close to it.

AUDIO

The speakers, embedded in the edges of the unit with subs at the back, are loud but lack the clarity I demand. Featuring CineStage X 4.2.2 Surround sound, the 110 UX does give you that immersive experience but I think this TV deserves a top end soundbar with satellite speakers. Don’t get me wrong, they do the job, I just want more separation and clarity from my audio device.

GAMING

The 110 UX is an excellent gaming TV. It has two 2.1 HDMI ports and I used one of them to play Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

The game is known for its incredible realism and on the 110 UX, it was epic. The TV comes equipped with Game Mode Pro. Capable of 144Hz this screen is big and responsive with almost no lag and screen tearing. It offers low-latency MEMC technology for ultra-smooth gameplay.

The TV will recognise the device you plug in and through the on-screen Game Bar you’ll have automatic or manual control of the TV’s gaming settings.

UI

In Australia the 110 UX runs on the latest version of Hisense’s operating system, VIDAA U8. It’s very snappy and presents like most modern interfaces.

You’ll receive recommendations and be able to search across Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video, Disney+, Kayo, Foxtel, Stan iView, Freeview Plus and more.

The remote is a long candy bar shape with a solar panel on the bottom. You’ll also get major streaming services on several buttons.

CONCLUSION

This TV is a welcome surprise from Hisense. A massive display with flagship quality video. The asking price of $25K is a lot, so the market is niche. But I’m glad Hisense made it and I’m glad I got to experience it on my own. If you can afford it and you have the room, it’s definitely worth considering.
