It reads like something out of a science fiction novel, but this story is real. Warhound, a new defence technology company, wants to produce genetically enhanced working dogs for the US military and law enforcement. The first pups are expected as early as 2027.

The startup just emerged from stealth with a US$200 million seed round. Warhound is a collaboration between American technology entrepreneurs Ben Lamm (Colossal Biosciences) and Palmer Luckey (Anduril Industries), and the aim is to rebuild America’s domestic supply of elite working dogs. The United States relies heavily on breeds from Europe, like the Belgian Malinois and German Shepherd.

More than 80% of U.S. military working dogs come from Europe, so it makes sense to bring the supply program ‘in-house’. It takes three years from acquisition to find out if a dog can make the grade.  The role of Warhound CEO David Spirk is to reduce US dependence on foreign ‘supply chains’ when producing candidates for military service.

“Our long-term goal is simple: healthier dogs, better-prepared teams, and more service members and first responders coming home safely,” said David Spirk.

“Leading Warhound, and strengthening America’s working-dog capabilities, is an opportunity to apply my experience to a mission I care deeply about: protecting people and helping the animals who support them. My focus is building a team that can turn scientific advances into capabilities that work in the field.”

Military working dogs have served alongside America’s armed forces for more than 84 years. The United States Department of War’s Military Working Dog Program has evolved significantly.  Currently, it comprises over 2,200 working dog teams, which are operationally critical for detection and patrol work and play a vital role in the country’s defence infrastructure.

COMPANY PROFILE
Warhound: The Advanced Canine Genetics and Cybernetic Platform
Focus Area Strategic Overview & Capabilities
◆ Core Mission & Origin Conceived by tech entrepreneurs Ben Lamm and Palmer Luckey to rebuild America’s domestic supply of elite working dogs for military, law enforcement, and first responders, ending reliance on a shrinking European supply chain.
◆ Leadership & Funding Led by CEO David Spirk (former CDO for the Department of War and USSOCOM). Emerged from stealth with a $200 million seed round backed by In-Q-Tel, Sequoia Capital, ARK Invest, Lux Capital, and others.
◆ Biotechnology & Genetics Leverages Colossal Biosciences’ genetics, cloning, and secure biobanking to produce healthier canines, aiming to drastically improve upon the current system where less than half of procured dogs successfully complete training.
◆ Cybernetics & Hardware All dogs will be equipped with Anduril’s cybernetic Augments, including Eagle Eye technology, specialized eye/ear protection, and advanced software for superior battlefield situational awareness.
◆ Animal Welfare & Ethics Operations and training programs are fully certified by the American Humane Society, guaranteeing strict ethical oversight, lifetime canine care, and established adoption/reunification protocols for retired dogs.

Warhound is combining Colossal Biosciences’ genetics, cloning, and animal biology with Anduril’s advanced defence technology to radically change how the United States prepares military working dogs. Colossal is behind mind-blowing projects like ‘de-extinction’ of the woolly mammoth and dire wolf.

“Every day, we ask dogs to put their lives on the line to protect ours,” said Ben Lamm.

“They detect explosives, protect our troops, and run toward dangers that most people are trained to run away from. Yet we’re still relying on outdated approaches to breeding and training these extraordinary animals, with too many never making it through the process. We have an opportunity to fundamentally change that. Colossal has spent years pioneering breakthroughs in genetics, cloning, and animal biology, and now we’re applying that science to give these dogs the best possible chance at a long, healthy life and a successful mission. If we’re going to ask man’s best friend to protect America, we owe it to them to use every tool at our disposal to protect them, too,”

All dogs will be equipped by Anduril’s advanced cybernetic Augments, software, and battlefield situational awareness. Warhound dog-and-handler teams will connect Anduril’s integrated capabilities – including eye and ear protection and Eagle Eye technology. This will help safeguard working dogs, their handlers, and the wider unit while supporting safer, more effective missions.

“Man’s best friend deserves man’s best tech,” said Palmer Luckey.

Warhound will operate under the guidance of the American Humane Society, which will certify its training programs and support the reunification of retired military working dogs with their former handlers and adoption protocols. Warhound says it will significantly reduce washouts, limit the number of dogs unnecessarily entering intensive training, and enable safer, more effective missions.

“Working dogs are extraordinary animals whose courage and loyalty save lives,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane.

“We owe these dogs a commitment to their well-being that matches their service to us. What excites me about Warhound is the opportunity to make health, welfare, and exceptional care fundamental to a working-dog program from the very beginning. Success means helping these dogs thrive throughout their lives—from training and active service to the loving, dignified retirement every canine hero deserves.”

Clearly, this is a controversial subject, and Warhound knows it.

“Advances in biotechnology bring both opportunity and responsibility,” said Alta Charo, Warren P. Knowles Professor Emerita of Law and Bioethics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

“What I find promising about Warhound is the opportunity to improve working dogs’ health and welfare while supporting their lifesaving work. As a bioethicist, my role is to help ensure that scientific ambition is matched by careful ethical review, meaningful oversight, and a lifelong commitment to the animals’ well-being. With the support of the American Humane Society and their history with the military working dog reunification as well as Pups for Patriots, Warhound has a strong foundation and a program worthy of public trust.”

Dogs hold a special place in our hearts. They will give their lives for us on the battlefield and at home, so when a company talks about cloning and genetic enhancement, you can expect a strong reaction from the public. Let’s see what happens over the next year or so.

The Texas-based company is backed by In-Q-Tel, Sequoia Capital, ARK Invest, Franklin Templeton, Bob Nelsen, Breyer Capital, CAZ Investments, USIT, Neogenesis, Builders VC, and Lux Capital, among others.
