Bravo DJI.

The next generation Osmo Pocket 3 is a superbly thought out content creation device that will have owners of the previous models throwing their cash at DJI.

And I’m one of those.

Here are just some of the reasons why I’m SUPER PUMPED about the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

  • 2-inch OLED screen that rotates and activates device – 100% P3 wide colour gamut.
  • 1-inch CMOS sensor with 3.2μm equivalent pixel size, high ISO, and high dynamic range
  • 10-Bit D-Log M
  • Built-in timecode function
  • Wirelessly connect to the two transmitters of DJI Mic 2 without connecting the receiver
  • Full-pixel PDAF for stable and fast focusing
  • Low light setting in 4K/30fps
  • Active Track 6.0
  • Bigger is better

DJI sent through the Creator Combo kit for review. It’s the ultimate vlogging package because of the wide angle and gimbal stabilised footage. The image quality has improved out of sight. Make sure you check out the night mode shots in top video. The massive issue with the first models – like all action cams – was and still is – poor low light performance. On a bright sunny day the Pocket and Pocket 2 are fantastic. But add a little gloom and the image starts to degrade rapidly.

It’s good to see DJI approach low light with some sort of solution. The larger sensor helps but clearly with their low light mode they are aggressively reducing noise in camera. This is limited to 4K 30fps which is fine by me. The look may not suit everyone but at least they are doing something when it comes to low light. See for yourself in the images below. They weren’t recorded in extremely low light but it gives you an idea of what DJI is doing with its processing of the image.

One the left – normal 4K/25fps. On the right – low light mode 4K/25fps

Slow motion gets a boost with the new model too. 4K 120fps is pretty sweet on a gimbal.

The screen is pretty clever too. When I saw the image on the box I thought, “does it move?” Well, yes it does. It rotates from landscape to portrait orientation and back again with a satisfying snap. It also turns the Pocket 3 on or off. It’s worth noting that low light mode does not work in portrait shooting.

The other big advantage the Pocket 3 has over action cameras is autofocus. It adds so much more to your videos or photos. So whether it’s focus tracking of kids, pets, and dancers the Pocket 3 is bang on with sharpness. It also has object display mode. This quickly changes focus to the displayed object held up by the presenter.

DJI Mic 2 Transmitter

The other fantastic part of the this combo package is the wireless microphone setup. There’s a transmitter included in the box but if you get another mic – you can pair it as well. The process in ridiculously simple. Like I said, this is a well thought out creation device that will offer far more than the previous models to serious creators.

Stay tuned to Image Matrix Tech for more videos and analysis over the next few days.
