In Sunday’s segment on Sky News Australia (Weekend Edition with Jaynie Seal) we took a look at a new cyber report from Bitdefender which has lifted the lid on the dark web marketplace where criminals sell stolen data.
It shows business is thriving with everything from credit cards to passports on sale.
BITDEFENDER FOUND:
- Stolen credit cards sell at a fraction of what criminals ‘guarantee’ is on the balance. For example: Purchase a Visa Gold with CVV for A$175 that has at least a $25,000 balance.
- Working SIM cards with anonymous numbers can be bought in dark markets to hide your identity. For example: Bitdefender found 4 SIM cards going for just A$500.
- Social media account credentials are big business. For example: 500 million Facebook accounts (usually acquired via breaches) are being sold for A$20. Followers can also be purchased, with 50,000 Instagram followers being sold for A$250.
- Passports and other IDs (real or excellent fakes with chips) are big business. US Passport is worth A$2,750 while a EU Biometric passport is A$7,300.
- Popular Streaming Services (stolen accounts or created via stolen credit cards) go for a fraction of the cost of a real subscription. For example: 3 years of Netflix for 0.001 BTC (about $30 in today’s price).
You can download the report here.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT?
- We can never get the data back – it’s lost to the dark web forever but we can take some action.
- Don’t share you ID unless absolutely necessary
- Immediately change passwords after notification of a breach (like the Optus or Latitude breaches).
- Change Credit Card Numbers.
- Never respond to any text, message or phone call for money. Go directly to the bank with the listed phone number.
- Don’t be a sucker!
