The Samsung midrange A series certainly look good. But how good are the cameras?
Let’s look at the A72, the top model out of the range.
It has a 64MP Main Camera with OIS (Optical Image Stabilisation) and Ultra Wide Camera.
On top of that, the A72 has 3x optical zoom and 30X Space Zoom on the Telephoto Camera with OIS.
It also has a 5MP macro camera.

I took the following images on an overcast day at Circular Quay, Sydney Harbour.
As long as you are using these shots as framed, you’ll be very happy with the results.
If you try to crop in on the original jpegs then you’ll start pulling the images apart.
Given that – my opinion of the shots below is based on the frame at its highest resolution. Not zoomed in.
A lot to like about this image.
The texture of the clouds and the water is frozen beautifully due to the high shutter speed.
With low ISO there is no noise and I have to say it’s a realistic capture of the real moment.
It’s sharp too with dimensions of 4000 x 3000.
This adds a bit of colour in the foreground.
Same spot using the optical zoom.
Another great image that really shows the compression qualities of a zoom lens. The exposure is spot on and there’s plenty of detail.
Very clean shot for a 3264 x 2448 original.
This zoom shot across the water to the Opera House isn’t as good as the others.
A lot of noise in the water, ferry, Opera House sails and clouds.
This is the 30x Space Zoom in action. The image is 3264 x 2448 in size but that doesn’t really help.
Only use this for emergencies!
This is a good camera system for a midrange phone.
It’s not 5G but until we see millimetre wave take off in Australia, that’s a minor concern.
So if you want one, the A72 goes for $749 AUD.
