I am the first to admit that I’m in a highly fortunate position as a tech journo to get access to the latest and greatest toys that are on offer from so many of the top manufacturers around. I’ve had some great experiences, and the original Shokz OpenFit was one of them and more recently the OpenDots ONE. It’s always interesting to see how the evolution of devices like this brings a change in user experience; in this case, it’s good, but not a massive leap from my previous experience.

THE HARDWARE, SETUP AND COMFORT

Under the hood, the Shokz OpenFit 2+ features DualBoost technology with separate low and high-frequency drivers, which delivers a surprisingly rich and dynamic sound for an open-ear design. The addition of Dolby Audio support takes the listening experience up a notch, making music sound even more vibrant. Shokz has also equipped them with Bluetooth 5.4 for faster, more stable connections, and a physical button on each bud that’s a huge improvement for in-use control. Plus, with an IP55 water resistance rating, they’re more than ready to handle sweat and rain.

Getting started with the Shokz OpenFit 2+ is straightforward. For first-time pairing, simply open the charging case and the earbuds automatically enter Bluetooth pairing mode, indicated by a flashing orange and green light. Then, go to your device’s Bluetooth settings and select “OpenFit 2+ by Shokz” to connect. For subsequent pairings, you’ll place both earbuds in the case, press and hold the button inside for three seconds until the light flashes, and then connect via your device’s Bluetooth settings.

The Shokz app provides a hub for managing key features of the OpenFit 2+ earphones, including EQ and Multipoint connection. Within the app, users can select from four preset EQ modes—Standard, Vocal, Bass Boost, and Treble Boost—or create a custom equaliser to fine-tune their audio experience. The app is also essential for enabling and managing Multipoint Pairing, a feature that allows the earphones to be connected to two devices simultaneously, enabling seamless transitions between, for example, a phone and a computer without the need for manual re-pairing. The app’s intuitive interface simplifies this process, making it easy to connect and switch between devices as needed.

The design of the OpenFit 2+ is centred around exceptional comfort and stability. Each earbud weighs just 9.4 grams and features a flexible ear hook made with a nickel-titanium alloy and a new Ultra-Soft Silicone 2.0 material. This construction is inspired by the golden spiral, a design principle that optimises the distribution of weight. As a result, the earphones gently rest around the ear, with the weight perfectly balanced between the earbud itself and the battery compartment, preventing any single point of pressure. This well-distributed, lightweight feel ensures a secure and comfortable fit, even during extended use or vigorous activity, without causing fatigue or discomfort.

AUDIO QUALITY

The audio delivery of the OpenFit 2+ is a direct result of its open-ear design, which prioritises situational awareness over sealed-in sound. This means that while they deliver clear and dynamic audio, they cannot compete with the bass response or immersive soundstage of traditional in-ear or over-ear headphones that create a closed acoustic environment.

The high-range audio is remarkably crisp, and the mids are very clean, making these well-suited to streaming your favourite TV shows or listening to specific genres of music while on the go. While the bass is present and acceptable for an open-ear model, it lacks the deep, thumping punch found in headphones that can trap and amplify low frequencies.

Ultimately, the trade-off is a deliberate compromise: a slight loss in high-fidelity audio quality in exchange for the safety and comfort of hearing your surroundings.

CONCLUSION – A GAME CHANGER FOR ALL DAY LISTENING

I’ve been a fan of open-ear headphones for a while, and the Shokz OpenFit 2+ truly raises the bar. From the moment you put them on, the comfort is simply unmatched. The redesigned, flexible ear hooks feel incredibly light and natural, almost as if they aren’t there at all. I’ve worn them for everything from long runs to full workdays, and they’ve stayed securely in place without any discomfort or need for constant adjustment. This is a massive win for all-day wearability.

Throughout the day, you’ll find that the battery life is nothing short of outstanding. Shokz promises up to 11 hours on a single charge, and they easily last through an entire day of mixed-use music, podcasts, and calls. With the charging case, you get a total of 48 hours, which means you can go for over a week without needing to plug in. The quick-charge feature is also a lifesaver, giving you 2 hours of listening time from just a 10-minute charge.

One of the most valuable features for me is the multipoint connection. I can seamlessly switch between my phone and laptop without fumbling with Bluetooth settings. It’s incredibly convenient for taking a call on my phone while listening to music on my computer. While I have noticed an occasional brief dropout, they are few and far between, and the connection quickly re-establishes itself. Given the convenience of staying connected to two devices at once, it’s a small price to pay.

Overall, the Shokz OpenFit 2+ are a fantastic upgrade. They perfectly blend the signature open-ear awareness with improved comfort and superior battery life. If you’re looking for a pair of headphones that you can wear all day comfortably while staying connected to your surroundings, these are an excellent investment.
