Sony’s premier earbuds – my personal favourites – have been upgraded with the release of the WF-1000XM6, claiming a 25% improvement in noise cancellation over the previous version.

The new earbuds feature Sony’s HD Noise Cancelling Processor QN3e and four microphones per earbud—up from three in the previous model—to deliver what the company describes as “remarkable quietness, even in challenging situations such as traveling in vehicles or spending time in cafés.” The WF-1000XM6 targets mid-to-high frequency noise, which is common in daily settings.

Sound quality has also received significant upgrades. The earbuds now support 32-bit audio processing, compared to 24-bit in the WF-1000XM5, and feature a newly developed driver unit with a hybrid diaphragm design for deeper bass and clearer high frequencies.

Sony collaborated with Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated sound engineers, including Randy Merrill, Chris Gehringer, Mike Piacentini, and Michael Romanowski, to fine-tune the audio profile.

For calls, the earbuds incorporate bone conduction sensors and AI-powered noise reduction to isolate voices from background noise. Sony claims this delivers its best call quality in the truly wireless category.

The redesigned earbuds are approximately 11% slimmer than the previous generation and feature improved ergonomics for comfort during extended wear. A new ventilation structure reduces internal sounds like footsteps and chewing.

Other features include compatibility with Google Gemini for hands-free assistance, Hi-Res Audio Wireless, and readiness for LE Audio technology. Battery life extends up to 8 hours on a single charge and 24 hours with the charging case.
