How AI Helps Clean and Save Energy in Samsung’s Latest Washing Machine

When Samsung went all in with AI at IFA 2024, it wasn’t just about announcing clever products, it was also about pushing smart home technology that makes better use of energy. As our homes become smarter with more IoT devices, power usage becomes a greater issue. Especially when it comes to increased prices for energy.

The new Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo is a unique large-capacity washer and dryer unit which is now available in Australia. It’s the most advanced clothes washing unit I’ve seen – that is actually ready to buy. The all-in-one appliance integrates 18.5kg smart washer with a 10kg smart heat-pump into a single unit which saves space and labour. If you’re in a rush, the Super Speed Cycle, can wash a 3KG load in 28 minutes and dry a load in 70 minutes using Heat Pump technology.

The machine has a 7-inch display and SmartThings connectivity but the screen does a lot more than you would think. The display acts as a control centre for monitoring detergent levels, remaining time on the laundry cycle and energy usage. The screen also shows all
connected appliances within the home with the ability to turn them on or off.

Sensors help to optimise washing and drying by sensing the weight of the laundry then accurately dispensing the right amount of water and detergent. This is something manual machines cannot match in terms of water waste and avoiding overuse of detergent. It also detects the fabric and monitors the level of soiling during the cycle, then adjusts washing time and detergent use accordingly. The drying process is based on the weight and type of fabric.

It’s a high tech, one-stop washing machine from the future.

“One of the other important features around this is how we’ve integrated AI,” Jeremy Senior, Vice President – Consumer Electronics, Samsung Electronics Australia, explained to Image Matrix Tech.

“So it will detect the soiling, it will detect the weight of the washing and it will detect the load cycle required and can save you up to 60% energy usage when you wash on AI mode.”

60% is a lot. And it’s all thanks to AI. Yes, AI is actually useful, not just a copy writing assistant.

“Not only does it have the latest in our SmartThings technology, but it’s also a highly efficient machine allowing you to wash and dry a full load of washing in under a hundred minutes,” Senior added.

According to research commissioned by Samsung, only 15% of consumers said they have a full understanding of how AI can be used in their daily lives and yet 66% of us are looking for ways to create more time.

“Utilising AI and the other functionality of SmartThings, you can then work to optimise the energy efficiency of those products,” according to Senior.

“And we all know that Australians are looking to save money on energy at the moment.

“And this is a critical tool that gives you visibility of each of the products, whether it be your kitchen appliances, your television at home, or the air conditioning and your external battery.

“So our open source and our partnerships with brands such as Tesla even allow you to integrate external batteries and solar into this plan.” 

Samsung is relying on AI to help the tech giant to become Net Zero by 2050.
