DJI continues to give creators options with the release of its Osmo Mobile 8P gimbal made for smartphones. If you own a recently released pro iPhone or top-end Samsung or OPPO, you already have incredible cameras at your disposal. For A$269, you can not only add rock-solid motorised stability, you get DJI’s advanced tracking and detachable remote with live view screen. The A$219 version doesn’t come with the Module 2 attachment for the best tracking results.
The remote is especially helpful when solo shooting or setting up awkward angles. It does phone mirroring so you have complete control in the palm of you hand. This works a lot better than smartwatch control because turning your wrist is tricky while setting up the shot. Creators can connect their iPhones directly to the Mobile 8P for native tracking using Apple DockKit.
DETACHABLE REMOTE
The detachable remote features a screen that mirrors the view from a smartphone or the Osmo Mobile 8P’s Multifunctional Module 2. The joystick gives control of the gimbal’s movement and zoom. Brightness and temperature of the fill light on the Multifunctional Module 2 can also be adjusted by eight levels. The remote’s magnetic design makes it easy to snap on or off the gimbal’s handle.
As I wrote above, this remote viewing for framing, combined with control functions, makes this a brilliant addition to a low-cost phone stabiliser.
TRACK ANYTHING
The new Multifunctional Module 2 pairs with the Osmo Mobile 8P to track more than just people and pets. It can also keep general objects, like cars and landmarks, centred in the frame. Creators can also use ActiveTrack 8.0 through the DJI Mimo app. This type of tracking is making its way into all DJI products with a module.
Creators can keep subjects centred in crowded environments and awkward areas with obstacles. It should be noted that iPhone creators can track subjects through their native camera app, because Osmo Mobile 8P supports Apple DockKit.
DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE
The Osmo Mobile 8P’s 3-axis gimbal uses DJI’s eighth-generation stabilisation for dynamic shots and steady footage. Weighing approximately 386 g, it features a built-in tripod and a 215 mm extension rod. The tripod’s design has been updated to open wider for enhanced stability on various surfaces. Built to last, it offers up to 10 hours of operating time. The built-in USB-C port allows the gimbal to act as a phone charger, making it ideal for extended outdoor filming and live streaming.
The gimbal’s 360° Infinite Spin enables a smooth panoramic capture from any angle through an unlimited horizontal rotation. Combined with intelligent tracking, it continuously locks onto moving subjects for seamless, professional-looking footage. Low-angle shots are also possible by tilting the pan axis forward, allowing creators to capture the world from a child’s or pet’s eye level.
