ExpressVPN has announced the launch of ExpressAI, a new artificial intelligence platform designed to prioritise user privacy at a time when AI tools are increasingly being used for sensitive, everyday tasks.
Unveiled in Sydney last week, ExpressAI aims to tackle a growing concern among consumers: the trade-off between powerful AI features and the risk of personal data being stored, analysed, or reused for training. As more people rely on AI to draft emails, summarise documents, and even explore financial or health questions, the amount of sensitive information being shared has surged.
ExpressAI’s pitch is simple—deliver modern AI capabilities without exposing user data. The platform uses what’s known as “confidential computing,” meaning conversations are only decrypted inside a secure, isolated environment that even ExpressVPN itself cannot access. In practical terms, that means prompts, files, and chat histories remain encrypted and unreadable to anyone but the user.
The company says this approach sets ExpressAI apart from many existing AI services, which still process user data on traditional servers and may use that data to improve their models. With ExpressAI, conversations are not fed back into training systems, and users can choose to automatically delete chats using a “ghost mode.” There’s also an encrypted vault feature, where access to stored conversations is protected by a user-controlled password.
At launch, the platform includes five different AI models tailored for everyday use, ranging from writing and summarisation to more complex reasoning, coding, and image analysis tasks. A side-by-side comparison feature allows users to run the same query across multiple models, offering different perspectives and outputs in real time.
Security claims have also been independently assessed. German cybersecurity firm Cure53conducted a full audit of the platform, including penetration testing and a review of its encryption and infrastructure. The firm concluded that ExpressAI meets its stated privacy goals, with all identified vulnerabilities resolved before launch.
ExpressAI will roll out globally in phases via a standalone web app, with early access granted to ExpressVPN Pro subscribers. The service is included at no additional cost for Pro users, who receive daily usage credits and limited storage.
The launch shows a broader shift for ExpressVPN, which is expanding beyond its core VPN offering into a wider ecosystem of privacy-focused tools. With ExpressAI, the company is betting that as AI becomes more embedded in everyday life, privacy will become just as important as performance.
