New from Blackmagic Design: Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2

0

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K G2 is available now for $3 145 AUD. It has an adjustable touchscreen screen, larger battery (NP-F570), plus electronic viewfinder support. It ships with the latest Blackmagic generation 5 colour science while retaining the Super 35 HDR image sensor (13 stops), dual native ISO and EF lens mount from the previous model.

The G2 is closer to the 6K Pro than it is to the base 6K model. In fact, it’s the same as the Pro without in-built ND.

“Since the release of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, customers have been asking for some of the features to be added to the 6K model,” said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO.

“We’ve been able to achieve even greater manufacturing efficiencies which means that we are now able to release this new 6K model which adds an adjustable LCD touchscreen, larger longer battery life, support for the OLED viewfinder and improved on screen menus.

“We are excited to be offering these additional features that have been so popular with customers.”

All models can shoot up to 60 fps or 120 fps windowed. The optional viewfinder is a 1280 x 960 colour OLED display with built in proximity sensor and it’s a 4 element glass diopter. Glass is good!

When it comes to batteries, 6K models both now use larger NP-F570 batteries for longer shooting times. Battery use has been a weakness in these cameras. But they’ve always been easy to rig up with external batteries, such as a v-lock system.

One of the best things about buying a Blackmagic camera is getting a full version of DaVinci Resolve Studio. This is my daily NLE and it probably should be yours too! After decades with Premiere Pro, I’ve jumped ship. On a Mac it’s faster, way faster and if you shoot in Blackmagic RAW then you’ll be able to take advantage of industry leading colour correction and grading. It’s a $469 AUD bonus.

Although these are cinema cameras they do have gyro metadata. This means it’s possible to stabilise in post. Checkout the demo video below with Grant Petty.
