Sony is a really just showing off by making the FE 50-150MM F2 G Master lens. Announced overnight, this lens offers a stunning F2 constant aperture throughout its 50-150mm zoom range which is internal too.

But at A$6,799, it’s not a cheap lens.

KEY FEATURES FE 50-150MM F2 G Master

  • World-first telephoto zoom range of 50–150mm at constant F2
  • Prime-lens quality resolution and smooth bokeh
  • Fast, accurate autofocus with 4x XD Linear Motors
  • Internal zoom design for better balance and gimbal use
  • Lightweight, portable and weather-resistant, 1,340g
  • Continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking

Sony says it’s the World’s First Telephoto Zoom Lens designed for Wedding, Portrait, Indoor Sports, Photo and Video Professionals with a Maximum Focal Length of 150 mm and Constant F2 Aperture.  F2 certainly hits that portrait zone nicely from 50mm through to 85mm. I actually like portrait shots at greater lengths and this lens enables you to do that at 150mm.

The Bokeh samples I’ve seen are excellent. A newly developed 11-blade circular aperture further enhances the signature G Master bokeh. By integrating two XA (extreme aspherical) elements, two Super ED (extra-low dispersion) glass elements, and three ED elements, the lens effectively suppresses aberrations, ensuring sharp, high-contrast imagery across the entire zoom range.

Sony’s proprietary “Nano AR Coating II,” applied uniformly across the entire lens surface, significantly reduces ghosting and flare even in backlit conditions.

In my real world work I cannot go past Sony for autofocus. It’s absolutely bullet proof. Equipped with four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors and Sony’s advanced control algorithms, the FE 50-150mm F2 GM delivers fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus (AF). This high-performance AF system is compatible with Sony’s Alpha 9 III, supporting continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second with full AF/AE tracking.

The floating focusing system enables a minimum focusing distance of 0.4m at the wide end and a maximum magnification of 0.20 for detailed shooting.

VIDEO WORK

Designed with filmmakers in mind, the FE 50-150mm F2 GM minimises focus breathing and is compatible with Sony’s Breathing Compensation feature on select Alpha cameras. Linear Response MF ensures intuitive manual focus control, while the XD linear motors operate quietly to prevent unwanted noise from being captured during recording.

The internal zoom is a must for gimbal use. Measuring at approximately 200mm in length and weighing approximately 1,340g, the FE 50-150mm F2 G is well balanced on a stabiliser.

It’s also built tough, with a fluorine coating on the front element repels contaminants, making it easy to clean.

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The FE 50-150mm F2 GM (SEL50150GM) will be available in Australia from May 2025 for A$6,799.00.
