A major outage has affected Telstra’s mobile network this morning, leaving customers across Australia unable to make or receive phone calls, use mobile data, or access other mobile services. The disruption has also impacted customers of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that use the Telstra network, including Boost Mobile, Belong, ALDI Mobile and other resellers. Telstra has confirmed via social media that it is investigating the incident and says services are progressively being restored. At its latest update, the company reported that around 90 per cent of affected services had returned, although some customers may still experience intermittent issues while restoration work continues.

The outage has had effects well beyond smartphones. Businesses have reported EFTPOS disruptions, transport operators experienced communications failures that delayed or suspended some rail services, and some customers encountered difficulties contacting emergency services via Triple Zero from affected Telstra connections. Emergency authorities have advised anyone unable to reach 000 using a Telstra service to try another mobile network or a landline if one is available.

At this stage, Telstra has not identified a confirmed cause for the outage. Company representatives have stated there is no evidence to suggest the incident was the result of malicious activity, with investigations continuing into what triggered the network failure.

If you’re still experiencing problems, Telstra recommends restarting your device or enabling Flight Mode for around 30 seconds before reconnecting to the network. Customers with access to Wi-Fi should also enable Wi-Fi Calling, where supported, as a temporary alternative for voice calls while the remaining services are restored.
