Google has officially rolled out “Ask Maps,” its most significant Maps transformation in over a decade, to Australian users. The new feature integrates Google’s Gemini AI capabilities with real-time map data, enabling users to ask complex, natural-language questions about locations and transportation.
Core Features
Real-Time Transit Information: Users can now access live transit boards that update automatically. Queries as shown on the blog post, like “Is there a ferry to Taronga Zoo with views of the Opera House? When is the next one coming?” will display all options with live delay alerts at a glance. Driving directions will include real-time disruption notifications such as crashes or road construction.
Personal Intelligence Integration: The feature connects securely to Gmail and, soon, Calendar apps. It automatically factors in upcoming flight or dinner reservations to provide relevant suggestions. Users retain full control—app connections are disabled by default and must be manually enabled.

Conversation Memory: Ask Maps retains past conversations, allowing users to resume planning sessions. Users can simply ask, “Remind me, what activities did you suggest for my trip to Seattle?” to retrieve previously shared recommendations.
Privacy Approach
Google emphasises that user data remains private, with app integration opt-in rather than automatic. More details about the privacy framework are available on Google’s official documentation and help page.
What This Means for Users
The rollout represents a shift from traditional map navigation toward conversational, context-aware travel. Early testing reportedly showed users leveraging the tool for niche requests like finding quiet restaurants or planning scenic motorcycle routes.
