Microsoft is pushing ‘on device’ AI processing as the next step in Artificial Intelligence for the masses. This week the company launched Copilot+ PCs claiming “the fastest, most intelligent Windows PCs ever built.”
One would would hope so.
The new chips are capable of more than 40 trillion operations per second with all–day battery life. Copilot+ PCs is promising things other PCs can’t deliver when it comes to AI.
One of the points that stood out to me related to DaVinci Resolve. Resolve has always worked better on Mac. Absolutely no doubt about it. But this is promising news for Windows as Resolve makes use of AI and a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) to perform complicated tracking and masking.
I often need to jump from Mac to PCs and the advantage with DaVinci Resolve is being able to work on two different operating systems with little hassle. So this is great news that Microsoft is paying attention to the best NLE (in my opinion) you can use.
Another big feature is ‘Recall’ and it’s a little controversial. It will remember everything you have done on your PC. It does this by taking regular screenshots as you go about your business.
Snapshots stay locally on your PC and you can delete individual snapshots, adjust and delete ranges of time in Settings. You can pause at any point right from the icon in the System Tray on your Taskbar. You can choose apps and websites from ever being saved. So there’s a lot of control over what gets saved.
I actually do this manually all the time. But this involves receipts and other sensitive information. Recall makes use of your personal semantic index, built and stored on device. So unless you give someone else your password your data is safe.
I’m eager to try this because I’m always backtracking on my computers to find something I’ve done. I’ve got a good idea what I did but finding the exact moment is a pain. With recall you can scroll across time to find the content you need in your timeline across any application, website, document, or more.
