Later this year, Chery is expected to roll out the world’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) diesel system in a ute. A concept model was unveiled at the company’s tech day in Sydney earlier this month, and it looks the goods. Even though the vehicle on show wasn’t a working prototype, it’s generated plenty of excitement due to its unique powertrain.
“Utes aren’t just a vehicle in Australia; they’re a vital part of how we work and play. By introducing the world’s first plug-in hybrid diesel ute, we’re redefining what capability looks like for the segment, ” said Lucas Harris, Chery Australia Chief Operating Officer.
“Our technology delivers the torque, towing, and long-distance range Australians demand, whether for work or recreation, while significantly reducing fuel use and emissions.”

KEY SPECS
- Powered by a 2.5-litre turbocharged engine

- Delivers class-leading thermal efficiency rated at 47%
- 10% more fuel efficient compared to the average diesel powertrain

It’s a big, dual-cab ute at 5450mm in length. In person, the presentation was impressive. A well-designed snorkel, chunky 285/70 R17 all-terrain tyres, and a tub rack with 4×4 recovery tracks. The matte grey finish gave it a strong look, and although it’s meant to handle the toughest off-road conditions, it’s also designed for day-to-day town driving.
Chery also says there will be a petrol PHEV Chery ute produced in 2027.
