Apple has officially commenced its big week of announcements with the unveiling of the iPhone 17e, the latest “budget-friendly” entry in the iPhone 17 family. The 2026 iteration brings several “Pro” level features to a more “accessible” price point, including a massive jump in base storage and a proprietary cellular modem.

The iPhone 17e is priced at A$999, notably maintaining the same entry price as the previous generation (iPhone 16e) while doubling the starting storage to 256GB. I think it deserves serious consideration given the iPhone 17 starts at A$1,399.

MagSafe

iPhone 17e comes with MagSAfe

The addition of MagSafe is a massive bonus. It was sadly missing on the 16e. I tend to look down on a device that doesn’t have a MagSafe system, even Pixels are doing it now. It helps with more efficient wireless charging by making sure the alignment is correct. And it makes the 17e compatible with a massive range of magnetic accessories.

A19 and C1X Modem

The 17e is powered by the A19 chip, which Apple claims is up to 2x faster than the iPhone 11, thanks to its 6-core CPU, while the 4-core GPU now supports hardware-accelerated ray tracing for console-quality mobile gaming.

One of the most important upgrades is the C1X modem. Designed in-house by Apple, this next-gen cellular modem is reportedly:

  • 2x faster than the C1 modem found in the iPhone 16e.
  • 30% more energy efficient than the modems used in the iPhone 16 Pro.

Display and Durability

iPHone 17e is tougher

The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display (OLED) remains, but it’s now protected by Ceramic Shield 2. Apple states this new glass offers 3x better scratch resistance and features a new coating to significantly reduce glare in direct sunlight.

The device also inherits the Action button, allowing users to map physical shortcuts to features like the flashlight or Apple’s “visual intelligence” tools.

Camera

The iPhone 17e uses a single rear lens, 48MP Fusion camera system. While it lacks a second lens at the back, the high-resolution sensor enables an “optical-quality” 2x Telephoto crop.

On the software side, the device introduces next-generation portraits. The phone now automatically captures depth information for people, dogs, and cats, allowing users to turn a standard photo into a portrait—or shift the focus point—long after the shot is taken. Video capabilities include 4K Dolby Vision at 60 fps and Spatial Audio recording for playback on Vision Pro.

iPhone 17e is a great gaming device

The iPhone 17e ships with iOS 26, which means “Liquid Glass.” You’ll also get:

  • Live Translation: Real-time voice translation in FaceTime and phone calls.
  • Screen Awareness: Visual intelligence that can “see” and take action on content currently displayed on the screen.
  • Call Management: “Hold Assist” to wait on the line for customer service agents and enhanced “Call Screening” for unknown numbers.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison with last year’s model, showing the key features:

I think if you can live with the single main camera lens, this is compelling iPhone for less than a thousand dollars.
