The new full-frame, fully-stacked Exmor RS sensor, combined with the new BIONZ XR2 engine, is faster than its predecessor by a long way, and that means the a7R VI is in a much better position to shoot more types of activities, including wildlife.

When it comes to video, the 8K 30p recording with 8.2K oversampling is excellent, and it delivers the best results out of all the formats. This is a vastly improved camera when it comes to video, making it a strong hybrid option.

Check out the differences from the Mark V in the table below.

ALPHA 7R VI KEY FEATURES

Image Quality & Sensor Performance

  • 66.8 MP Full-Frame Stacked Sensor: Features an approximate, effective 66.8 MP fully-stacked Exmor RS sensor, delivering up to 16 stops of dynamic range and reduced noise in the mid-sensitivity range.
  • Dual Gain Shooting: A first in the Alpha series, this technology optimises sensor performance to reduce noise without losing shadow detail, ensuring smooth gradation and wide latitude.
  • Next-Gen Processing Power: Powered by the BIONZ XR2 engine with an integrated AI processing unit. Features an approximate 5.6x faster sensor readout than the previous model.
  • AI-Powered Auto White Balance: Utilises a visible light and infrared (IR) sensor combined with deep-learning illumination estimation for stable, natural color in shaded or indoor scenes.

Autofocus & Speed

  • Blackout-Free Continuous Shooting: Achieves speeds up to approximately 30 fps, delivering up to 60 AF/AE calculations per second with full AF/AE tracking.
  • Real-time Recognition AF+ (Plus): Utilises skeletal-based human pose estimation and tracking for reliable focus on fast-moving subjects, including athletes and dynamic scenes.

Stabilisation & Audio

  • Class-Leading Image Stabilisation: Precise 5-axis optical image stabilisation delivers up to 8.5 stops of compensation at the centre and 7.0 stops at the periphery.
  • Enhanced Handheld Video: A redesigned in-camera stabilisation system expands the roll-direction compensation range by 2x, while Dynamic Active Mode delivers incredibly smooth handheld footage.
  • 32-Bit Float Internal Audio: Supports internal 32-bit float audio recording when paired with the XLR-A4 XLR adaptor, eliminating the need for tedious level adjustments on location.

Video Capabilities

  • High-Resolution Recording: Supports 8K 30p recording with 8.2K oversampling, alongside full-frame 4K 60p and 120p recording.
  • Advanced Heat Management: Effective thermal design allows for uninterrupted 8K movie recording for up to 120 minutes.

Body, Display & Workflow

  • Ultra-Bright Viewfinder: Approximately 9.44M dot OLED viewfinder featuring a DCI-P3 equivalent colour gamut and 10-bit HDR. Maximum brightness is approximately three times higher than conventional models for clear visibility in bright sunlight.
  • Flexible Monitoring & Durable Build: Lightweight and durable magnesium alloy body equipped with a 4-axis multi-angle LCD monitor.
  • Pro Workflow Enhancements: Dual USB Type-C ports allow for simultaneous charging and data transfer. Includes illuminated rear buttons for low-light operation and a mode-dial “Memory Recall” to link shooting setups to customisable buttons.
  • Extended Battery Life: The new NP-SA100 high-capacity battery (2670 mAh) supports up to 710 still images via the LCD monitor or 600 via the viewfinder (CIPA standard).
  • Content Authenticity: Supports Sony’s Camera Authenticity Solution, including the C2PA standard, allowing secure verification that still images and videos were captured in-camera and are not AI-generated.
