Amazon Fire TV Stick HD has been announced for the Australian market, offering a compact, lower-cost way to add streaming features to older or secondary TVs.
HARDWARE
The new Fire TV Stick HD is built around a smaller, more practical design, coming in around 30% slimmer than the previous HD model. That makes it easier to slot into tight HDMI spaces, especially behind wall-mounted TVs where clearance is limited.
A key usability upgrade is its ability to draw power directly from a TV’s USB port. For most setups, that removes the need for a wall adapter and cuts down cable clutter. If needed, it can still be powered via USB-C and a traditional adapter.
Under the hood, Amazon claims more than a 30% performance uplift over the last HD stick. That should translate into noticeably faster boot times and app launches, which has traditionally been recognised a something of a weak point for entry-level streaming devices.

Connectivity has also been refreshed with Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 support, helping improve streaming stability in homes with multiple connected devices.
USER EXPERIENCE
The updated Fire TV interface focuses on speed and simplicity. Navigation has been streamlined, with better organisation of content categories and quicker access to frequently used apps through expanded home screen pinning.
Recommendations are more prominent, aiming to reduce the time spent digging through menus. As always, the usefulness of that will depend on how well it aligns with individual viewing habits and subscriptions.
Amazon has also flagged an upcoming “Adaptive Display” feature, designed to improve accessibility by scaling text and interface elements for easier readability on larger screens. It’s not available at launch but could be a meaningful addition for users who find dense menus difficult to navigate.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY
The Fire TV Stick HD is priced at AU$79 and is available for pre-order now, with shipping set to begin on April 29, 2026.
It will be sold through Amazon.com.au as well as major local retailers including JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, and The Good Guys, positioning it squarely as a budget-friendly option for upgrading older TVs or adding a portable streaming solution for travel.
